I promise, i’m not trying to make this blog too sports heavy. But, when you’re a baseball fan the news that a BIG BIG BIG, A-List name get’s pinched for 50 games means you’ve gotta talk about it. It’s a developing story that  is seeing new info come to the surface LITERALLY every few minutes.

Nationals Dodgers Baseball

Lets take a look at what we know so far:

*LA Times first reports Manny Rameriez tested positive for a PED and, per MLB rules, would serve a 50 game suspension starting tonight.

*ESPN First Take breaks the story about 10 till 12.

*Twitter EXPLODES

*People start theorizing, talking, reacting

*Court of Public Opinion weighs their guilty verdict.

This is where things get intersting though…about 5 minutes ago ESPN reports that Scott Boras (Manny’s agent) tells ESPN Baseball Guru Peter Gammons that Manny did fail the test for a PED and NOT a steroid. The PED in this case is/was a drug prescribed to Manny by a doctor for a medical condition.

This story is still developing. Check back later today for more news and my thoughts on this whole mess.

UPDATE 1 – 12:30pm

Manny has released a statement via the MLB Players Association. Here it is, via ESPN’s website:

“Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me,” Ramirez said. “Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now.

“I do want to say one other thing; I’ve taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons. I want to apologize to [Dodgers owner Frank] McCourt, Mrs. McCourt, [manager Joe] Torre, my teammates, the Dodger organization, and to the Dodger fans. LA is a special place to me and I know everybody is disappointed. So am I. I’m sorry about this whole situation.”

More updates to come throughout the day.

UPDATE 2 – 2:13pm
Story gets weirder and weirder. From Yahoo via Deadspins Twitter feed:

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the substance is supposed to boost sex drive. It is not Viagra, but a substance that treats the cause rather providing a temporary boost in sexual performance, the source said.

Wow. Also, ESPN is reporting the NAME of the Drug; Human chorionic gonadotropin. Here’s the Wikipedia definition of the drug

Story continues to develop. More to come.

UPDATE 3 – 2:30pm
Couple of different, yet equally intriguing takes on the Manny situation:
Keith Olbermann’s MLB.com Blog has some thoughts that give us a deeper look into the mind of Manny.

ESPN’s Rob Neyer chimes in with some thoughts, a few of which might make Dodger fans scratch their heads.

UPDATE 4 – 2:52pm

Deadspin’s AJ Daluerio has a MUST READ that you’ve just got to check out. Very odd…very…compelling.
